Abstract:

Materials gathered by Robert J. Brophy for the production of special memorial issues of the Robinson Jeffers Newsletter dedicated to poet William Everson (a.k.a. Brother Antoninus). Materials include assorted reflections on William Everson sent to Brophy by a range of poets, some prominent, as well as general correspondence relating to the production of the newsletter and materials on and photographs of William Everson. The collection also contains some correspondence between Brophy and Everson as well as some of Everson's poetry and other writings (a few in manuscript form) and one compact cassette recording of William Everson in Santa Cruz in approximately 1971.
Digital files include teaching materials, Brophy's submission of an William Everson entry for the Literary Encyclopedia, and other writings related to William Everson.

Robert J. Brophy (1998-2021) was the author of the 1973 study, Robinson Jeffers: Myth, Ritual, and Symbol in His Narrative Poems. He served as the editor of the Robinson Jeffers Newsletter and the founding editor of its successor Jeffers Studies. Brophy was also a founding member of the Robinson Jeffers Association.
William Everson (September 10, 1912-June 3, 1994), also known as Brother Antoninus, was an American poet of the San Francisco Renaissance, literary critic, and small press printer. He was poet-in-residence at the University of California, Santa Cruz during the 1970s and 1980s.
